Commonwealth Speaker presents Civil War Era Music
Organization: Caldwell Memorial Library
Description: Caldwell Memorial Library is proud to host Commonwealth Speaker and Artist for the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Thomas Jolin's presentation on "Civil War Era Music".
The trauma of the civil war produced a tremendous amount of music as the nation mourned and sought relief from the death of over 600,000 Americans. This presentation offers attendees the opportunity to reflect on what life was really like during that time through songs about soldiers' lives, domestic scenes, minstrel traditions and the fight to end slavery. Performing on the hammered dulcimer, button accordian, harmonica and banjo, Thomas Jolin shares Lincoln and Liberty, Battle Cry of Freedom, No More Auction Block and more. He also will discuss the origins of the songs and instruments. Audience participation is encouraged.
This presentation is a program of the Pennsylvania Humanities Council supported in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities. The Pennsylvania Humanities Council, a nonprofit organization, inspires individuals to enjoy and share a life of learning.
