Visiting Writer Series - Jeannine Marie Pitas
Organization: Saint Vincent College
Description: The Saint Vincent College English Department has announced that two of its leading literary entities, Eulalia Books and The Visiting Writers Series, are joining together for the launch of Jeannine Marie Pitas’ translation of Romina Freschi’s “Echo of the Park.” Fritas’ bilingual reading will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26, in the Fred M. Rogers Center.

Admission is free and open to the public.

A native of Buffalo, New York, Pitas is the author of three poetry chapbooks and the Spanish-English translator for several Latin American writers. Most notably, the translation of “I Remember Nightfall,” by Uruguayan poet Maroso di Grigorio, was shortlisted for the 2018 National Translation Award given by the American Literary Translators’ Association.

Pitas’ translation of “An Introduction to Octavio Paz,” by Mexican author Alberto Ruy Sánchez, was published by Mosaic Press in 2018, while her first full-length book of poetry, “Things Seen and Unseen,” was published in May 2018 by Quattro Books.

A graduate of the University of Toronto’s Centre for Comparative Literature, she teaches literature, writing and Spanish at the University of Dubuque in Dubuque, Iowa.

Eulalia Books is an independent publisher of literary translations, affiliated with the undergraduate literary translation minor at Saint Vincent College. The publisher is particularly interested in contemporary Latin American poetry and hybrid-genre works that have never before appeared in English translation.

The Visiting Writers Series brings writers and literary translators from across the country to read and discuss their work at Saint Vincent College. For more information, visit
