Fugitive Tire Roundup - 2012
Organization: Westmoreland Cleanways
Description: Westmoreland Cleanways is getting ready to kick-off its 16th annual Fugitive Tire Roundup. This successful program, initiated in 1995 by Import-Export Tire Company and Westmoreland Cleanways, has facilitated the collection of over 53,000 tires that escaped proper disposal and landed in county roadways, wetlands, fields and streams.
Dedicated youth groups in Westmoreland County choose a Saturday in April for their search and collection of escaped tires. Each group receives a "bounty" for up to 200 tires when they turn them in to one of the participating tire dealers. (Maximum bounty of $150).
The Fugitive Tire Roundup raises the environmental awareness of the participants when they see the impact that illegal dumping has on the environment. Dump sites can pose serious health risks, including the contamination of surface and ground water. Tires that have been illegally dumped provide the ideal breeding grounds for insects, rodents, and other pests that can cause serious illness to humans.
Through the active participation in the Fugitive Tire Roundup, members of the youth groups are becoming involved in their communities by helping to make them safer and healthier, while earning some extra money to support their organizations.
Westmoreland Cleanways is now accepting applications from county youth groups to participate in this year’s program. The deadline for registration is Friday, March 16, 2012; call (724) 836-4129 to register. Funding is limited, so groups are accepted on a first come, first served basis.
